Gracewing has an exciting range of publishing for 2008, including a major new programme for schools.
Alive to the World offers a complete curriculum for teaching social values, healthy sexuality and good citizenship
in school for ages 6 - 18 and provides a full PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) programme fitting into one
school period a week. This timely publication will be of immense help to any school wishing to meet the United Kingdom government's current expectations for the teaching of this subject. All the material conforms to the Magisterium of the Church, and the programme is warmly endorsed by His Eminence Cardinal López Trujillo, President of the Pontifical Council for the Family. The first series of pupil and teacher texts will be available from July this year - for further details please click on the link below.
This new material complements the other resources for school and parish already published by Gracewing. .
In 2007 there were two books by Inos Biffi - The Life of Mary (£5.99), a full colour board book, and An Illustrated Catechism (£12.99), a new one volume full colour paperback presentation of the immensely popular four books of his children's catechism, previously published separately as The Apostles' Creed, Prayer, The Sacraments, and The Ten Commandments.
Also in 2007 came publication of Bread of Life: Preparing for First Confession and First Communion by Fr Martin Edwards, Chaplain to Aid to the Church in Need in the United Kingdom. This beautifully illustrated book provides a complete resource for child and teacher, preparing children for these two Sacraments in the fullness of the Catholic Faith. The soundness of the exposition of Catholic teaching and doctrine matches that in the Confirmation programme by Dora Nash, Confirmed in the Faith, already published by Gracewing - a wonderfully practical and yet thorough course for confirmation.
A welcome addition to Benedictine resources is Vena Eastwood's exciting and highly practical tool for enhancing the spiritual development of pupils, teachers and staff Benedict Rules - OK! (£9.99) Both elementary and secondary students can benefit from this innovative approach to practical spirituality. As a schoolteacher and chaplain, Vena has for several years used the Rule of St Benedict for the development of school communities. This resource may be easily incorporated on a daily basis into school assembly or a religious education class, providing a systematic introduction to one of the world's spiritual treasures as well as a life-changing challenge to the whole school community.
Latest publications include:
The Icon in my Pocket by Owe Wikström, a book which explores the depths of holiness through our modern obsession with travel and tourism.
A new edition of the classic collection Sermons Preached on Various Occasions by Cardinal John Henry Newman. Sermons integrally linked with the establishment of the Catholic University of Ireland and the University Church in Dublin that Newman himself built.
Inklings of Heaven: C.S. Lewis and Eschatology by Sean Connolly, a brilliant new study which will be essential reading for all serious C.S. Lewis enthusiasts.
New editions of two very popular Gracewing titles are now available:
Shrines of Our Lady in
England by Anne Vail. This beautifully illustrated hardback provides an invaluable guide to all the principal Shrines of Our Lady, providing the pilgrim with the history and background of the particular Shrine, and full details of location, times of devotions, pilgrimages and services, accomodation and notes on other local attractions and places of interest.
Understanding the Spiritual Exercises by Michael Ivens, SJ. Already a classic for those using or studying the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola, this new revised and corrected edition of Fr Michael Ivens's masterwork will be warmly welcomed.
Recent new titles include:
The Gift of Confession: A Positive Approach to the Sacrament of Confession by Fr Michael de Stoop. Informative and entertaining, this book provides an excellent way to reacquaint ourselves with the benefits of this Sacrament. Written by an experienced chaplain for Catholic Youth Services it is a valuable resource for religious educators, with the rich theology of the Sacrament expressed in a clear and approachable way. His Eminence Cardinal George Pell writes: This short work will help people of all age groups, but especially young Catholic leaders.
Unfolding the Mystery (£9.99) Dom Hugh Gilbert, OSB, Abbot of Pluscarden,
shares with fellow-monks and fellow-Christians his community conferences and homilies - entering into the wealth of the mystery of Christ as the liturgy unfolds it. The liturgy unfolds its riches within an annual pattern: the Church's year. Here our life, lived in time, can meet and mingle with the life of Christ communicated in time. In Benedictine monasteries, the liturgical year shapes the whole life of the community. Through this book we can all enter into the depth of this experience throughout the year.
Arthur Middleton, Emeritus Canon of Durham Cathedral and Tutor at St Chad's College, has written an extemely accessible and practical guide Prayer in the Workaday World (£9.99) firmly rooted in the Christian tradition - the Fathers, the great figures of the Middles Ages, the seventeenth-century Anglican divines and the Tractarians. The many who are already familiar with this author's gift of writing with exemplary lucidity and theological profundity will not be disappointed with this latest book, which will prove useful to clergy and laity alike . .
