A Glimpse of Heaven: Great Catholic Churches of England and Wales is the new DVD - written, directed and narrated by Christopher Martin, whose groundbreaking book, also called A Glimpse of Heaven, was a best-selling phenomenon in 2006 and revitalised interest in Catholic church architecture throughout the country. Produced under the auspices of the Patrimony Committee of the Catholic Bishops' Conference, the DVD combines stunning photography from the book together with many previously unpublished images and newly filmed sequences to provide a continuous narrative from the Reformation to the present day. In a boxed two disc set at the bargain price of only £12.99 it is ideal for home viewing, or for use at parish evenings and discussion groups.

Also just in stock is the controversial new book by Bishop Athanasius Schneider on worthy reception of Holy Communion Dominus Est - It is the Lord, £5.99. Critically important at this juncture of ecclesiastical life, it is a translation of the edition published earlier this year by Vatican Press. The book has a Preface by the Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Archbishop Malcolm Ranjith, and is endorsed by Cardinal Francis Arinze, the Prefect of the Sacred Congregation, saying 'I have read the whole book with delight. It is excellent'. The theme of the book is that Communion-in-the-hand and standing for Communion are not consonant with the two-millenia-long Catholic tradition, and that both practices need to be re-evaluated for the good of the faithful and of the Church. Here is a simply written, yet authoritative exposition of this important subject, firmly rooted in the teaching of the Fathers of the Church, the practice of the early Church, the witness of the Magisterium and of the Rites themselves (Eastern and Western) and of course the teaching of the Second Vatican Council

The 26th November saw the publication of John Lingard: Priest and Historian (£20.00) the much looked for biography by Peter Phillips. It heads a good selection of biography and historical studies this year, including God's Candidate: The Life and Times of Pope John Paul I (£12.99) by Paul Spackman, St Mary Magdalen in Provence (£12.99) by Michael Donley, The Family and Descendants of St Thomas More (£17.99) by Martin Wood, a new edition of Cecil Kerr's Teresa Helena Higginson, and a paperback edition of James Pereiro's magisterial Cardinal Manning (£17.99). A very popular book this autumn has been English Catholic Heroes (£9.99), edited by John Jolliffe, in which a range of distinguished contributors present sixteen key figures in English Catholic life from the seventh to the twentieth century.

Benedict XVI and the Search for Truth (£12.99) by Robert Tilley is a key analysis of the development of the Pope's philosophical and theological thought. Labour and Justice: The Worker in Catholic Social Teaching (£17.99) by Gavan Duffy will become an essential guide to this often neglected area in the Church's mission, while Paul Haffner's latest book Towards a Theology of the Environment (£15.99) will be welcomed by all those who have benefited from the scholarship and skilful presentation of his earlier works published by Gracewing - here he presents an organic summary of environmental theology from both the Christian West and East in his customary clear and concise style, enriched by his scientific background as a physicist, as well as a priest and a professor of theology.

Another book published on November 26th was Heaven Revealed: The Holy Spirit and the Mass (£9.99) by Dom David Bird, OSB, a monk of Belmont Abbey in Herefordshire, currently superior of the Monastery of the Incarnation, Pachacamac, Lima, in Peru. Dom David provides a further treasury of eucharistic insight and theological reflection, following on from his earlier, very popular, The Royal Road to Joy (£12.99). Monastic wisdom also abounds in another recent title, Living the Mystery (£9.99), from Dom Hugh Gilbert, OSB, the Abbot of Pluscarden, which presents monastic conferences on key elements in Christian life - last year Gracewing published his much acclaimed, earlier book of spiritual meditations on the liturgical year Unfolding the Mystery (£9.99).

Just in is a new paperback edition of The Liturgical Year (£7.99), the richly illustrated companion to Inos Biff's other books The Life of Mary (£5.99), a full colour board book, and An Illustrated Catechism (£12.99), a new one volume full colour paperback presentation of the immensely popular four books of his children's catechism, previously published separately as The Apostles' Creed, Prayer, The Sacraments, and The Ten Commandments.

A welcome addition back to the list is the reprint of one of Gracewing's most popular titles, the little colour book How to Pray with Icons (£3.99) by Myroslaw Tataryn. It joins other key resources: St Stephen's Handbook for Altar Servers (£3.99) - the official guide from the Archconfraternity of St Stephen; Bread of Life: Preparing for First Confession and First Communion by Fr Martin Edwards, Chaplain to Aid to the Church in Need in the United Kingdom - a beautifully illustrated book that provides a complete resource for child and teacher, preparing children for these two Sacraments in the fullness of the Catholic Faith; Confirmed in the Faith by Dora Nash - an equally sound exposition of Catholic teaching and doctrine making a wonderfully practical and yet thorough course for confirmation.

Gracewing has an exciting major new programme for schools.

Alive to the World offers a complete curriculum for teaching social values, healthy sexuality and good citizenship in school for ages 6 - 18 and provides a full PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) programme fitting into one school period a week. This timely publication will be of immense help to any school wishing to meet the United Kingdom government's current expectations for the teaching of this subject. All the material conforms to the Magisterium of the Church, and the programme has been warmly endorsed by His late Eminence Cardinal López Trujillo, President of the Pontifical Council for the Family. The first series of pupil and teacher texts will be available from July this year - for further details please click on the link below.

A welcome addition to Benedictine resources for schools is Vena Eastwood's exciting and highly practical tool for enhancing the spiritual development of pupils, teachers and staff Benedict Rules - OK! (£9.99). Both elementary and secondary students can benefit from this innovative approach to practical spirituality. As a schoolteacher and chaplain, Vena has for several years used the Rule of St Benedict for the development of school communities. This resource may be easily incorporated on a daily basis into school assembly or a religious education class, providing a systematic introduction to one of the world's spiritual treasures as well as a life-changing challenge to the whole school community.

Recent new titles include:

The Gift of Confession: A Positive Approach to the Sacrament of Confession by Fr Michael de Stoop. Informative and entertaining, this book provides an excellent way to reacquaint ourselves with the benefits of this Sacrament. Written by an experienced chaplain for Catholic Youth Services it is a valuable resource for religious educators, with the rich theology of the Sacrament expressed in a clear and approachable way. His Eminence Cardinal George Pell writes: This short work will help people of all age groups, but especially young Catholic leaders.

The Icon in my Pocket by Owe Wikström, a book which explores the depths of holiness through our modern obsession with travel and tourism.

A new edition of the classic collection Sermons Preached on Various Occasions by Cardinal John Henry Newman. Sermons integrally linked with the establishment of the Catholic University of Ireland and the University Church in Dublin that Newman himself built.

Inklings of Heaven: C.S. Lewis and Eschatology by Sean Connolly, a brilliant new study which will be essential reading for all serious C.S. Lewis enthusiasts.

New editions of two very popular Gracewing titles were issued in 2008:

Shrines of Our Lady in England by Anne Vail. This beautifully illustrated hardback provides an invaluable guide to all the principal Shrines of Our Lady, providing the pilgrim with the history and background of the particular Shrine, and full details of location, times of devotions, pilgrimages and services, accommodation and notes on other local attractions and places of interest.

Understanding the Spiritual Exercises by Michael Ivens, SJ. Already a classic for those using or studying the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola, this new revised and corrected edition of Fr Michael Ivens's masterwork will be warmly welcomed.
